8/25/2023 0 Comments African jungle girls![]() There was no reason to try five stores-the reference wasn’t even that good (alt-lit being only adjacent to indie sleaze), and a book is not a sexy gift. I need to work on my impulse control, I think. I started my machines and then went on an hour-plus journey to five different Brooklyn bookstores, none of which had this historically significant text in stock. Uh-oh!ĭay of the sleaze party, I was at Laundry City sorting out my whites when I had the idea that I should get Becca a copy of the 2009 Tao Lin novel, Shoplifting From American Apparel. Kaitlyn: I don’t get any of those references. The prematurely canceled and iconic public-access show New York Noise defined my high-school years, and I still sometimes wonder if Jeffrey Lewis did or did not see Will Oldham on the L train that one time. Not saying I’m completely disconnected from the gist of whatever it refers to. Is it music? Disco shorts? 2007? 2010? Maybe, and I’m sorry, but … is it Terry Richardson? Even trying to define what “it” is feels like a losing battle, and that’s why Becca is braver than I am. Lizzie: As far as I can remember, no one really called that whole thing anything the first time around, but now it’s been officially branded by a trend forecaster or whomever, which I guess makes it easier to talk about. I expected that she would execute it flawlessly, as I know that she went to NYU around the time of the Great Recession. I love a theme and I appreciate that Becca always provides one. ![]() I only learned about it at the tail end on Tumblr. The invite said, “Come with the same energy as if it were 2010 and you were bringing your fake ID to a club on the LES that chloe sevigny went to once.” I didn’t relate to this, as I’m actually a little too young (brag) to have experienced the first indie-sleaze era in person. Recently, our friend Becca held an indie-sleaze-themed 31st-birthday party for herself in Prospect Heights, right in between Lizzie’s house and my house, which was very convenient. Last year, a photographer who was closely associated with the aesthetic back in the aughts was hired to document a fairly sleazy-looking party at a music venue in downtown indie-rock territory … hosted by, uh, Old Navy! But this newsletter isn’t about cultural criticism. There could be venture capital behind it. Kaitlyn: As with any trend, it’s hard to tell whether the “indie sleaze” revival is real or imaginary, happening or being made to happen. Sign up for Kaitlyn and Lizzie’s newsletter here.

To give a quick overview of his work, here are the core elements you’ll need: What goes into the CXO deck? Andy Raskin popularized this narrative framework in his now-famous post about Zuora’s deck entitled “The Greatest Sales Deck I’ve Ever Seen” (a staple for any enterprise sales team). Once they share this belief, they can offer tops-down pressure to accelerate your deal. Your goal here is to get high-level buy-in so that an executive believes not only in your product but also in your vision. What are the key elements of great sales decks? We’ll look in more detail at how that’s done, below. The presentation needs to show how you will get the prospect from one state to the other. It needs to outline the “before” state when the prospect has a problem, and the “after” state when that problem is solved. 8/24/2023 0 Comments Boron chemical element![]() This enabled his assistant Carl-Gustav Mosander to receive early credit for work that Mosander chose not to formally publish until many years later after he had worked out all of the details. Berzelius usually cited articles published in other journals, but he also reported on the work in his laboratory which had not yet been published. This leads to the question of who should be considered the ultimate discoverer of a chemical element? Should it be the first person to describe the initial properties, the one who found the oxide or the metal, the one who separated the element or the first one to publish their results? On the matter of publication, the Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius published an annual review (equivalent to our present abstract service) during the early nineteenth century. If a publication was delayed, the discoverer has often historically been "scooped" by another scientist. There are also cases where the honor of discovery is not given to the first person who actually discovered the element but to the first person to claim the discovery in print. In general, the requirements for discovery claims have tightened through the years and claims that were previously accepted would no longer meet the minimum constraints now imposed. This fact was not realized at the time of their discovery, until the English chemist Humphry Davy showed that earths were compounds of oxygen and metals in 1808.Īlthough the atomic weight of an element and spectral analysis of that element were not available in the early days, both of these elemental properties would be required before discovery of the element would be accepted by the latter part of the nineteenth century. The reason for this is that in the case of these rare earth elements, the "earth" now refers to oxides of a metal not to the metal itself. The honor of discovery has often been accorded not to the person who first isolated the element but to the person who discovered the original mineral itself, even when the ore was impure and that ore actually contained many elements. Also in those days, there were many claims, e.g., the discovery of certain rare earth elements of the lanthanide series, which involved the discovery of a mineral ore, from which an element was later extracted. In those early days, atomic weight values were not available, and there was no spectral analysis that would later be supplied by arc, spark, absorption, phosphorescent or x-ray spectra. The method of discovery of the chemical elements in the late eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries used the properties of the new substances, their separability, the colors of their compounds, the shapes of their crystals and their reactivity to determine the existence of new elements. The basis for the claim of discovery of an element has varied over the centuries. There are also some miscellaneous names as well as some obscure names for particular elements. The names of the various chemical elements come from many sources including mythological concepts or characters places, areas or countries properties of the element or its compounds, such as color, smell or its inability to combine and the names of scientists. As we shall see in the following elemental review, the origin of the chemical elements show a wide diversity with some of these elements having an origin in antiquity, other elements having been discovered within the past few hundred years and still others have been synthesized within the past fifty years via nuclear reactions on heavy elements since these other elements are unstable and radioactive and do not exist in nature. What do we mean by a chemical element? A chemical element is matter, all of whose atoms are alike in having the same positive charge on the nucleus and the same number of extra-nuclear electrons. AdS stands for anti-de Sitter, which is shorthand for a spacetime with constant, negative curvature. The difficult problem of constructing more realistic model universes is a topic of ongoing and active research.Īnother strategy is to generalize the so-called AdS/CFT correspondence, which arguably furnishes our best understanding of quantum gravity to date. It is possible to construct nearly stable universes in this manner, but these constructions possess features that make them unrealistic. One approach is to find an appropriate “string compactification”-a type of architectural map for strings and membranes-which builds up a universe with a positive cosmological constant. ![]() There are many strategies in quantum gravity for constructing an expanding universe. Their findings may offer a new direction for theorists trying to build models of quantum gravity with a positive cosmological constant consistent with our own Universe. Inspired by this framework, Yasuaki Hikida from Kyoto University in Japan and colleagues studied a simplified model of an expanding universe and found that it also has holographic properties. ![]() While quantum gravity models with a negative cosmological constant do not describe our Universe, they do have a surprising feature: the gravity-filled volume of spacetime can be described by a field theory without gravity, often envisioned as a hologram living on a surface. They have had more success with the imagined setting of a negative cosmological constant. A positive cosmological constant is a major challenge for quantum gravity theorists to understand. Our prevailing understanding of cosmology posits that this accelerating expansion is due to empty space possessing an energy, described by a positive cosmological constant. ×Įxperimental discoveries in the late 1990s established that we live in a Universe undergoing accelerating expansion. The calculations of Hikida and colleagues establish that a WZW conformal field theory produces correct answers for cosmological entropies. The surface of the lake can be identified with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) conformal field theory, which describes gravitational fluctuations that are represented as waves. The bottom of the lake corresponds to earlier times when the universe is smaller, and the top of the lake corresponds to later times when the universe is larger. 106, pp.APS/ Alan Stonebraker Figure 1: Three-dimensional de Sitter space is an expanding universe, which can be imagined as a lake whose width expands from a narrow bottom to a wide top.
